PHKS Internal Medicine Ward: "The HOSPI side table solved many everyday challenges at once"

First, an adjustable-height medication table was developed to complement the new smart medicine cabinets. At Päijät-Häme Central Hospital, the table’s functionalities were quickly embraced. Selka then went on to design a more mobile, size S version of the HOSPI table specifically for the ward’s needs.

By listening closely to customers, Selka has in recent years taken an innovative approach to various product development projects. Together with clients, the company has created solutions such as tables for conductors and spinning instructors, studio speaker stands, and accessories for X-ray equipment.

The mobile HOSPI side tables for hospitals are another example, born from solving real daily challenges. Their compact size, easy mobility, and height adjustability have earned genuine praise from healthcare staff.

At the internal medicine ward 1 of Päijät-Häme Central Hospital, a large volume of medications is managed daily. Each of the approximately 25 patients receives a personalized dosage.

"Medications are dispensed from new, quite tall smart cabinets. Initially, we used low metal tables, working in uncomfortable positions. It made us wonder: in the age of electric desks, shouldn’t there be a height-adjustable solution for this too?" says Assistant Head Nurse Johanna Eklund, who actively participated in product development.

Since no suitable ready-made solution was available, the hospital turned to local furniture manufacturer Selka, who was willing to take on the challenge.

One key problem with the old system was the instability of lightweight plastic medication glasses, which easily tipped over. Selka addressed this by adding holes in the tabletop to securely hold the glasses. An adjustable holder was also added for medication lists to keep papers organized and within easy view.

Using clear 3D models, the development quickly moved to the prototype stage. Final details were refined based on user feedback from the ward staff.

"We don’t miss the clattering old metal tables"

Now, the HOSPI table dimensions are optimal: the side tray, the number of holes, and their placement are just right. Everything needed fits into one mobile unit.

While the main medication table stays beside the smart cabinet, the wheels make it easy to move when needed, especially in tight spaces.

"The smooth, lockable wheels really shine with the smaller HOSPI S tables, which we use around the clock. We are currently working in rather cramped temporary spaces, and the extra surface area is invaluable. Honestly, we couldn’t manage without the HOSPI tables anymore," says Johanna Eklund.

Nobody wants to go back to the old clattering metal carts if a HOSPI table is available. The easily cleaned side table, equipped with raised edges, efficiently carries everything from blood pressure monitors and medicines to clothes and phones.

"In patient rooms, surface space is extremely limited—often just the sink edge and the patient’s own table, which are not very hygienic. The HOSPI table has made a major difference. I call it my 'shopping cart'—it’s just as essential as a shopping trolley in a store," says Nurse Pauliina, the ward’s hygiene coordinator.

She also praises the easy height adjustment, allowing the table to be set perfectly regardless of user height. If needed, the user can lower the table when sitting beside a patient, keeping items within easy reach.

Some substitute staff from other departments work at the ward, and according to Johanna Eklund, the HOSPI tables have sparked admiration and interest.

Good news for those interested: both HOSPI table models are now part of Selka’s standard collection and available to everyone.
